| New US/UN Rep a Leading Woman? |
01/27/2001
One of the most coveted assignments, the post of United States
permanent Representative to the UN may go to one of the three
distinguished candidates. In the order of likelihood, they are:
Rita Hauser, a New Yorker substantially active in peacekeeping
and peacemaking issues and a solid intellectual whose husband
Gustav is prominent in the communications field; Elizabeth Dole,
former Red Cross chief and wife of stalwart Republican Bob Dole;
and the third is a professor in Harvard who headed an NGO delegation
to the Beijing women's conference. Representative Lee Hamilton
was mentioned as well as Catherine Bertini, Executive Director
of the World Food Programme.
Incidentally, it will be full-circle for Ms. Dole if appointed.
She had started as a guide at the UN. Despite her husband's political
affects on the organization, she kept out of the controversy.
Ms. Hauser has many friends in UN circles and has contributed
in every way to building bridges between Americaninterest and
international concerns.
